Interpretive Instructions

Though it is hard to see, the picture above shows many pieces of paper that were folded and ripped in different ways. Nothing earth-shaking right? The thing is everyone was given the same instructions. As it says in the picture... What does it mean?

This was one of many activities me and my class did in our Project Design and Development Course, also known as Genius Hour. Throughout these activities we have been learning more about our selves, by doing one on one chats with someone else and questions that open you up to think about who you are. We have also used these activities to improve our teamwork by doing the human knot. We've improved our communication by doing blind drawing instructions with a partner. All of these skills, or knowledge will help with our course, but this one activity really made me think.

I really liked the outcome of this activity because it was all just so different. There were very few who looked the same, or ever remotely similar if you look at the designs the folds made. We were only given 5 instructions:
1. Fold the paper in half
2. Fold the paper in half again
3. Fold the paper into a triangle
4. Rip off the bottom right corner
5. Unfold you're paper

All of this was while we had our eyes closed, which shows us two things. First of all it shows that when given vague instructions everybody will interpret them differently. With folding in half, which way? When making the triangle, how? Ripping the corner, what size? the other thing this shows is that we, as humans, look around at others in a group to see if we are doing something differently. We, as humans, look to see how to do something if we don't know. Because we weren't allowed to look we had to with instinct instead of the group majority.

Here is an example of the activity:

In larger groups there is a larger possibility for difference.

What Inspires Me

What Inspires Me

This picture inspires me. It shows that life is always changing, and the blur makes the outcome unclear. Though change can seem like a pattern, such as the seasons, each new season brings new challenges, and a different outlook than a previous one. No matter what something may seem to be at first everything is subject to change and will bring new challenges, goals, and performances. That is what inspires me.
